Parking fees increasing in Budapest

Budapest city council decided on Wednesday to raise parking fees in several districts from August 1.

Parking zones may be expanded in the 12th, 13th and 14th districts.

Parking fees will move up one category in the Second, 12th, 13th and 14th Districts.

There are five parking fee categories in Budapest, based on how many people like to park in the given area. Parking is the most expensive in the Fifth District and gets cheaper towards the outskirts of the city.

The central government abolished parking fees across the country during the state of emergency, but has said parking fees will apply again from July 1.

The city will carry out an overall review of the Budapest parking system, and will consider the idea of progressive parking fees, in which shorter parking periods would be cheaper than longer ones and the first 15 minutes may be free of charge.
