Opera director fired after 15 years
Social Relations and Culture Minister Zoltán Tarr decided on Monday to terminate the working relationship of the Hungarian State Opera and its long-time director general Szilveszter Ókovács with immediate effect, culture state secretary Ervin Nagy announced on social media.

he decision was made after light was shed on several problems affecting the allowances of leading officials and finances.
Nagy wrote that Ókovács’s monthly gross salary was Ft 4.8 million and he received other allowances. The opera boss and his deputy set bonuses for themselves without the ministry’s approval, according to Nagy, who said that a temporary leader will head the institution.
“From today, Ókovács’s reign of terror and wasteful practices is over at the Opera”, Prime Minister Péter Magyar declared.
He added that a new director of the Opera will be hired in an open and transparent tender procedure.
Until then, Balázs Ivacs will carry out the duties of the director temporarily.
