Public sector employees to lose housing subsidy

The government will stop providing its annual Ft 1 million housing subsidy for public-service employees at the end of the year as part of a broader overhaul of the law enforcement sector, Interior Minister Gábor Pósfai told RTL.

The government plans to replace the scheme with a system designed to encourage personnel to move between regions. Monthly housing assistance will also be extended to employees still serving their probationary period.

Pósfai described the recently announced 15% pay rise for law-enforcement staff as only the first step towards addressing longstanding wage concerns.

He also highlighted the need to replace ageing police vehicles and renovate deteriorating police stations.

The sector has around 9,000 vacancies nationwide, including 2,000 in Budapest.

Since former officers were allowed to rejoin the force, about 1,200 have expressed an interest in returning and more than 400 have already been reinstated.

Pósfai said he would consider an increase of 1,500-2,000 personnel over the next year a satisfactory result.
