GVH fines Aldi Ft 123mn for misleading ads

The Competition Authority (GVH) has fined Aldi Ft 123 million to penalise the retail chain for its advertising claim that it offered the “widest product range” and the “best deals”.

The GVH launched an investigation after Aldi began using the slogans in March 2025, based on first-place finishes in two categories of the 2024 Nők Lapja Food Awards.

The authority concluded that the awards, based on a subjective public vote, were insufficient to prove that Aldi had the broadest selection or the best discounts on the market.

The GVH stressed that advertisers must substantiate claims of market leadership, which can influence consumer decisions.

Aldi stopped using the disputed slogans and revised its promotional leaflets after the investigation began.
