Court rules Iványi school may reopen

The Szeged Regional Court annulled the decision of the Csongrád-Csanád county government office that had blocked the reopening of the Wesley János kindergarten, primary school and grammar school in Szeged, the Hungarian Civil Liberties Union (TASZ) announced.

The school, run by Gábor Iványi’s Hungarian Evangelical Fellowship (MET), lost its operating licence in August 2024, just before the start of the school year.

After the closure, the Wesley Public Benefit Foundation launched a development workshop and applied to run the school itself. The government office rejected the application, citing the Ministry of Public Administration and Regional Development’s view that other institutions had enough places.

In its final judgment, the court found the decision unfounded, annulled it and ordered a new procedure.

It said it was not enough that the ministry had cited only one statistic, as the authority must also assess the institution’s actual role, and noted that the ministry’s opinion contained no data on children with special educational needs.

The MET and the foundation are preparing to reopen the school in the 2027-28 school year as a safe, integrated school.

The MET was again listed as a registered church last month.
