Ministry to examine excessive air traffic at night

The Transport and Investment Ministry has set up a working group because of complaints over noise levels at night resulting from excessive air traffic at Liszt Ferenc International airport, 24.hu reported on Thursday.

According to regulations a maximum of 50 aircraft movements (take offs or landings) may take place at the airport between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. However, in the so-called ‘deep sleeping hours’, between midnight and 5 a.m., only six aircraft movements may be scheduled.

Only in exceptional cases can these regulations be exceeded, and then only with the express permission from the air traffic authority.

In reality, in the first quarter of 2026, a total of 829 movements were scheduled in the deep sleeping hours, which translates to an average of 9.2 movements per night instead of the allowed six.

In the worst breach of regulations, up to 30 night aircraft movements were recorded in the most restricted hours.

The worst affected parts of Budapest include areas of the Tenth, 14th, 17th and 18th Districts, along with communities in Vecsés and Üllő, just outside the city.
