Budapest plans parking-fees for e-cars

Budapest will launch parking fees for e-cars from January 2027, as approved at a city council meeting on Friday.

However, fully electric and hydrogen-powered vehicles will receive a 50% parking-fee discount until July 2030.

A proposal to keep such vehicles exempt from charges until that date was rejected.

City council also postponed a planned doubling of parking fees for cars weighing more than two tons until January 1, 2028. Mayor Gergely Karácsony had proposed scrapping the measure entirely, arguing that Budapest cannot access the vehicle registry data needed to determine precise vehicle weights and that resolving the issue lies with parliament.

E-cars with larger batteries tend to be heavier than the threshold, Portfolio adds.

A civil initiative has also been launched, demanding that free parking for vehicles with green license plates be maintained and that the double fee be reconsidered. The petition had gathered more than 1,500 supporters in just two days by Friday, and continues.
