Népszabadság to return ten years after closure

Népszabadság will relaunch on October 8, 2026, exactly one decade after its closure, returning as an online public-affairs news outlet and a printed weekly, Népszava has announced.
The new publication will be operated by Liberty Press, which also holds the publishing rights to Jelen and Népszava. Some 90% of Liberty Press will be owned by 4Sight Media Group, currently being registered, while the remaining 10% will be held by Tóth Ákos, the new paper’s editor-in-chief.
4Sight will provide funding for the first two years of operation.
The online edition will cover Hungarian and international public affairs, as well as major social and economic developments, through news, features, background reports, analysis and interviews.
A weekly print edition of Népszabadság will focus on the main issues and events of the week. Népszava content will also appear in the new Népszabadság weekly.
Use of the Népszabadság name has been authorised by the Népszabadság Association, which holds the trademark.
The original paper ceased publication on October 8, 2016 after its then-owner unexpectedly suspended both its print and online operations.
