$15mn spent on World Athletics tournament

The Hungarian state paid $15 million to host the inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championship in Budapest last week, according to a 2024 contract obtained by Telex.
Of that sum, $10 million went towards prize money and $5 million was paid to World Athletics as a hosting fee.
The event was promoted as offering a record prize pool, with winners receiving $150,000 and eighth-place finishers $2,000, but it had not previously been disclosed that the entire prize fund was financed by the Hungarian state.
The contract, signed by the National Event Organizing Agency and World Athletics, also required Hungary to cover the event’s operating costs.
In return, the Hungarian side retained ticket revenue and most sponsorship and broadcasting income.
