BA reports strong traffic in August

Passenger traffic at Budapest’s Liszt Ferenc International Airport was up 12.3% year-on-year to 2.14 million in August, Budapest Airport (BA) said on Friday.
Traffic during the three summer months reached an all-time high of 6.2 million, up 13.7% from a year earlier. London, Tel Aviv and Istanbul were the most popular destinations from Budapest in August.
Air cargo volumes declined for the second consecutive month in August, with 27,666 tons handled, down 21% year-on-year, partly due to new EU rules affecting e-commerce shipments. BA expects demand to recover in September.
Despite the monthly decline, the airport retained its leading regional position, handling nearly 290,000 tons of cargo between January and August, the highest volume in the region, BA said in a statement.
In separate news, Transport and Investment Minister Dávid Vitézy announced that two officials from his ministry have joined the BA’s board.
Levente Nagy, a ministry chief adviser, has been appointed chairman, while state secretary Katalin Sirály and former chief of Aeropark Gábor Somogyi-Tóth have also joined the board.
