US again open to visa applications from Hungarians
The US resumed processing US immigration visa applications from Hungary and Poland last week, Reuters news agency reported.
The temporary suspension of visa issuance for citizens of other countries will remain in effect.
The US State Department announced in January that it would temporarily halt processing of immigrant visa applications for permanent residence from 75 countries where applicants are “at a higher risk of requiring government assistance”, according to US authorities.
Reuters sources said the White House has instructed US embassies in Hungary and Poland to prioritize visa applications submitted in those countries. It is not yet clear why those two countries were chosen, 444 adds.
Reuters reported in May that US Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau had instructed senior State Department officials to help secure a US visa for a former Polish government official wanted on corruption charges.
Former Polish justice minister Zbigniew Ziobro, who was living in political asylum in Hungary under the Fidesz government, travelled to the US immediately after the April election on a media correspondent’s visa, according to Polish sources.
After arriving in the US, Ziobro announced that he would become a correspondent for a right-wing Polish television station.
