ÁSZ calls for revamp of TAO scheme
The State Audit Office (ÁSZ) has called for a review of the TAO tax-incentive scheme, which provides tax breaks for companies that sponsor spectator sports, as the system has created opportunities for abuse.
The ÁSZ acknowledged that TAO funding, for football, handball, volleyball, basketball, water polo and ice hockey has contributed significantly to the sector’s infrastructure and professional development but at the same time has sometimes led to irregularities in some cases.
TAO funding in 2022-25 reached Ft 367.5 billion, or 15-20% of total state spending on sport. Of this, Ft 49.2 billion went towards investment projects, with football receiving the largest share.
The audit revealed unlawful practices, such as the lack of public procurement, as well as conflicts of interest, when companies providing TAO support become contractors for the teams they financed.
The ÁSZ recommended stricter oversight of the scheme and an overhaul of the funding mechanism.
Interior Minister Gábor Pósfai, responsible for sports, said in July that the government wanted to make the TAO scheme more transparent and fairer.
