Government to rebuild border station

The government has decided to completely rebuild the Hercegszántó-Béreg crossing station at the Serbian border, Transport and Investment Minister Dávid Vitézy announced on Sunday.

The ministry will invite bids in a public procurement process in the coming weeks, he said.

The development will alleviate the traffic burden at the Röszke crossing, which is struggling with congestion, as the border crossing will be open to heavy goods traffic with 24-hour opening hours, truck parking lots and expanded capacity.

At present international freight traffic can cross the Hungary-Serbia border only at Röszke and Tompa while in peak hours 30,000-40,000 vehicles cross at Röszke and queues several kilometres long are frequent.

The Hecegszántó station has a low capacity for passenger traffic.
