Karácsony imposes spending freeze

Budapest mayor Gergely Karácsony has ordered that all new financial commitments by the city require his prior approval from September 1, Magyar Hang reports, citing several sources.

The city has also frozen staffing levels and suspended practically all payments, including spending by municipal political groups and committees.

The measures are intended to preserve sufficient funds to meet salary obligations until the city and the government reach an agreement on Budapest’s finances.
