Mohu proposes ending cash refunds

Senior executive Csaba Bozóki of waste disposal firm Mohu said the company is proposing that the government end cash refunds for bottles in Hungary’s deposit-return system.
Under the proposal, retailers would no longer pay out cash for returned bottles. Consumers could use the refund only for purchases in the store, transfer it to a bank account through the Mohu app, or donate it to charity.
Website 444 highlighted public-safety concerns in Budapest, arguing that cash refunds are sometimes used (by homeless people) to buy cheap synthetic drugs and other harmful substances.
Several district leaders have also called for changes, including Sixth District mayor Tamás Soproni, who suggested that the refund scheme be suspended.
