Vitézy reverses award of contract to Mészáros firm
Transportation and Public Works Minister Dávid Vitézy says a decision by his predecessor János Lázár would have handed a lucrative highway operating contract to companies tied to Lőrinc Mészáros and László Szijj at inflated cost and lower quality standards and vowed “we will not let this slide”.
Lázár had arranged for MKIF, in which Mészáros and Szijj hold stakes, to operate the M6 section between the Érd interchange and Dunaújváros, plus a connecting stretch near the M8 bridge, for 30 years following the highway’s return to state ownership in October 2026.
Vitézy described that decision as legally invalid, and said his ministry found cheaper alternatives, from Magyar Közút and former concessionaire M6 Duna, that would save the state some Ft 100 billion over 11 years compared to MKIF’s pricing.
Vitézy rejected MKIF’s claim that its higher cost reflects the technical scope of its work, pointing out that the current concessionaire faces stricter standards than MKIF would have, with road evenness requirements 17% tougher, wheel-rut tolerances 31% stricter, and skid-resistance standards 20% higher.
