New airport taxi fee causes congestion

A new Ft 800 entry fee for taxi drivers caused significant congestion at Budapest Airport on Monday after the previous five-minute free access period was abolished.
Many drivers were unprepared for the mandatory card-only payment system at exit barriers or had difficulty reaching the payment terminals from their vehicles.
The disruption was worsened by the summer morning peak traffic, prompting temporary opening of the barriers to ease congestion.
The Metropolitan Taxi Association and City Taxi said they had not been consulted about the measure and only learned of it shortly before implementation.
They are calling for the fee to be suspended and are considering legal action, arguing that passenger drop-offs alone do not constitute airport infrastructure use requiring an additional charge.
