Nearly 50 apply to lead tax office

Nearly 50 people have applied for the position of president of the National Tax and Customs Office (NAV) by the deadline, Finance Minister András Kármán announced on his Facebook page on Saturday.

He said a formal pre-screening of the bids is about to begin, to be followed by personal interviews, with all bids to be assessed by August 28.

The cabinet firmly intends to make sure that the tax authority should not be run by political appointees, said Kármán.

Until now the president of the tax authority was given state secretary status but this has now ceased according to a recently approved bill, he noted.

He added that the government considers it important that in future all areas of NAV should operate solely on professional grounds without political influence.
