Crackdown on illegal Lake Balaton piers

Authorities are preparing to remove illegal piers and other unauthorised structures along Lake Balaton, aiming to protect the lake’s reed beds, improve water quality and clarify the legal status of waterfront areas, according to hirbalaton.hu.
Lakeside municipalities have been asked to replace private, unlicensed piers with designated community facilities.
Structures built without permits or without paying the required riverbed usage fees will be demolished.
Previous aerial surveys identified more than 1,000 illegal piers around the lake.
Although the Water Authority, sometimes working with water police and municipalities, has attempted to address the issue in the past, large-scale demolition was delayed by a lack of funding.
The planned action will also affect some unauthorised lakeside buildings and fishing ponds.
The scale of the measures is expected to trigger strong reactions among affected property owners and settlements.
