Record number of Hungarians working abroad

The number of Hungarians registered as working abroad reached a record high of 124,000 in the second quarter of 2026, Portfolio writes citing the latest job market report by the Central Statistics Office.
The figure refers to workers still connected to Hungary through residency or family ties and does not include the more than half a million Hungarians who have permanently emigrated.
The KSH report showed that 214,100 people were unemployed in June, corresponding to a 4.4% jobless rate.
Job-seekers spent an average of 12.5 months looking for work, but 36.7% of the jobless found new positions in under three months.
The percentage of jobless who had been looking for work for at least one year reached 35.3%.
There were 4.63 million employed at the end of June, broadly unchanged from recent months but nearly 30,000 fewer than a year earlier. Excluding those working abroad and public workers, employment on the primary domestic labour market stood at 4.44 million, down by 50,000 year-on-year.
