Ft 2.5bn in NKA grants repaid

Recent recipients of questionable grants from the National Cultural Fund (NKA) have already repaid more than Ft 2.5 billion to the state after the government urged them to return the money, Culture Minister Zoltán Tarr said on the weekend.

According to Tarr, around 10-15% of the disputed funding has been repaid so far.

He suggested that, as investigations continue, more recipients may choose to return the grants before facing official scrutiny.

Fidesz rejected the allegations, insisting that all grants were awarded legally and accusing the Tisza government of politically targeting former beneficiaries.

The party also called for the release of former government officials and a parliamentary staff member who were recently detained, arguing that the investigations should be conducted on a legal rather than political basis.
