Gov’t to slash spending on sporting events

The government will fundamentally change the financing model for major international sporting events following concerns over excessive costs at previous competitions, state secretary for sport Attila Kálnoki-Kis announced.

Based on the findings of a recent review, the government is introducing new criteria for evaluating future bids.

Events that rely almost entirely on state funding will no longer receive support, Kálnoki-Kis said.

Future government-backed competitions will have to demonstrate professional justification, reasonable costs, clear social benefits and a greater emphasis on own revenues in their financing structure.
