Police look into Ft 25bn FTC project

Budapest Police have begun an investigation into the funding for a proposed new facility for Budapest sports club Ferencváros (FTC) that was never built.
The investigation, launched on suspicion of mismanagement based on a report by the author of the club’s “ultras” fan blog C-közép, is expected to examine the fate of the Ft 25 billion transferred a decade ago to prepare and begin construction of the sports complex in the nearby Népliget park.
The project, called “Fradiváros” was never completed, and the funds were neither used for their original purpose nor returned to the state budget.
The concept was promoted by FTC president and Fidesz vice-president Gábor Kubatov, with the aim of relocating all departments of the club into a modern, integrated sports centre.
A 2022 cabinet decision allowed FTC to use the previously earmarked funds for the club’s operations instead of the original investment purpose.
One of the primary questions of the investigation is whether the money was spent appropriately after the change in purpose.
