President Sulyok steps down

In a stunning achievement for Péter Magyar, President Tamás Sulyok on Saturday signed the amendment to the Fundamental Law that deposes him from the position of head of state.
As the amendment enters into effect one day after the president signed it, Hungary has no head of state, from Monday.
Magyar had been demanding Sulyok’s dismissal during his successful election campaign, describing him as a “Fidesz puppet”.
Sulyok announced early Saturday evening that he would sign the amendment passed by parliament on Monday, despite not agreeing with it. He said: after carefully considering his legal options and conscience, he would fulfil his obligation under the Fundamental Law.
He described the signing as the final act of his presidency and a reflection of his “unconditional respect for the office of the President”.
