Debrecen mayor calls on Semcorp to leave
Semcorp should cease operations in Debrecen and relocate production elsewhere, as its owners have not maintained environmental standards in accordance with the permit issued for the factory, mayor László Papp declared in a video statement following talks with company representatives on Wednesday.
The Debrecen government office has already suspended operations at the battery separator foil plant after tests detected elevated levels of several metals and semi-metals in groundwater at the site.
Papp said the Chinese company had failed to honour earlier commitments, and that the environmental findings undermined confidence in Semcorp’s continued presence in the city.
