Budapest abolishes parking meters

Budapest will remove all on-street parking meters from July 1, meaning that parking can only be paid for via mobile app, SMS, or phone call.
The change follows a decision by the Budapest city council to phase out parking meters to reduce operating costs.
At the same time, parking fees will increase by 33-50%, depending on the zone.
The new hourly rates will be Ft 800 in Zone A, Ft 600 in Zone B, Ft 400 in Zone C, and Ft 300 in Zone D.
Night-time parking at guarded P+R facilities will cost Ft 300 per hour, while monthly daytime passes will be discontinued.
Parking at the northern car park on Margaret Island will also rise to Ft 800 per hour.
The city maintains that eliminating parking meters is expected to save billions of forints in operating costs.
The BudapestGO app will support parking payments in a future update but will not offer the feature immediately.
The changes coincide with the introduction of a revised BKK night transport network, which aims to improve coverage and reduce travel times in Budapest and the surrounding metropolitan area.
