Hungary last in EU in household consumption



Hungarian household final consumption equated to 73% of the EU average in 2025, placing the country jointly last in the bloc alongside Latvia, according to a Eurostat report published on Wednesday.

Hungary had also been near the bottom in 2024, level with Bulgaria at 73% of the EU average, and ahead of only Latvia at 72%.

Both Bulgaria and Latvia improved their relative consumption levels last year, while Hungary’s indicator remained unchanged.

By comparison, Polish household consumption reached 88% of the EU average, ahead of Lithuania at 87% and Slovenia at 86%.

Meanwhile, Hungary remained 23rd among the EU’s 27 member states in 2025 in terms of GDP per capita calculated at purchasing power parity, with 76% of the EU average. Only Bulgaria (68%), Greece (68%), Latvia (71%) and Slovakia (75%) ranked lower.
