Fidesz media shrivel up as state funds run dry

Mediaworks Hungary is carrying out a structural and portfolio transformation which could entail the loss of nearly 200 jobs and the demise of several pro-Fidesz newspapers that were largely financed by the government before the April elections, HVG reports.
The company, as the publisher, convened its staff members for 10 a.m. on Monday where the changes were announced.
One of the affected publications, the tabloid Bors, made public the company’s official statement, which said that the media market has recently changed considerably requiring changes that would affect the number of staff members while renewing the structure of the operations.
Bors has already ceased to produce a print edition and is now found only online, while Magyar Nemzet – long considered Fidesz’s flagship publication – may be transformed into a weekly.
In addition to all 19 county newspapers, Mediaworks also produces such websites and other media outlets as Origo, HírTV, Ripost, Világgazdaság and Metropol, the last of which suspended publication at the end of May.
Mediaworks said that it will remain stable in the long run, and operate as an efficient and competitive media company while preserving its professional quality.
HVG wrote last week that the Fidesz media manager closed 2025 with a Ft 14 billion loss despite revenue of Ft 58 billion, then found itself in a difficult position after the elections when state advertisements ended.
