Gov’t to end five-year mortgage interest freeze

The government has published for public consultation a draft regulation ending the mortgage interest rate freeze on September 30, bringing a measure in place for nearly five years to a close.
The policy, introduced in 2022, has shielded interest payments from market rate increases for both residential and non-residential mortgage borrowers.
Its expiry will affect around 216,000 loans – about one in four mortgage contracts – where instalments have remained insulated from rate changes.
