Gov’t rushes €1bn grid upgrade tenders

Although the European Commission has only begun assessing Hungary’s revised Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF) plans, the government has already launched two public consultations regarding €1.4 billion in energy investments.

The funding is intended for electricity grid modernisation and smart metering. The application window is tight, open from June 19 to July 20, reflecting pressure to accelerate projects ahead of the RRF’s final implementation deadline of December 31, 2030.

The larger scheme, worth Ft 486 billion, aims to strengthen grid capacity and integrate weather-dependent renewables, particularly solar power.

Distribution operators can apply for support covering up to 75% of costs, while system operator Mavir may receive up to 90% co-financing for upgrades to high-, medium- and low-voltage networks and substations.

A separate Ft 54 billion programme will finance the rollout of smart electricity meters for households and businesses, with 100% funding available for distribution companies.
