Tarr orders audit of loaned museum collections

The government will review the status of museum artifacts and artworks currently on loan to public institutions and private individuals, Zoltán Tarr, Minister for Social Relations and Culture, announced on Wednesday.
All museums have been asked to provide lists of artworks and artifacts that are not currently held in public collections.
The review aims to determine where these items are located and under what agreements they were lent out.
“Politicians from the previous government treated Hungarian national artworks as if they were selecting decorative items from a shopping mall,” Tarr said, arguing that decisions were often made informally and without sufficient transparency.
The minister stressed that the placement of museum artworks should not be based on political preferences or personal taste.
“Artworks are part of our national heritage and should serve the cultural enrichment of the Hungarian people,” he stated.
