Tarr plans reform of public media

Minister for Social Relations and Culture Zoltán Tarr has pledged a two-phase overhaul of Hungary’s public media system following talks with EU Rule of Law Commissioner Michael McGrath in Budapest.
According to Tarr, the government has already begun reviewing public media and plans to launch a nationwide public consultation on the role and responsibilities of public service media in a democratic society.
The goal, he said, is to create a public media system that reflects democratic and European values while serving the public interest.
Tarr also raised broader concerns about media freedom in Hungary, stating that independent journalism should be able to operate free from political pressure, surveillance, and intimidation.
Hungary deserves a free and independent press and journalists should no longer have to work in an environment where they are monitored or restricted, said Tarr.
