Samsung expansion suspected behind land sales

According to reporting by Telex, the town of Göd is purchasing privately owned plots at a government-set agricultural land valuation before reclassifying them as investment land and reselling them at a significantly higher price to a South Korean industrial investor.

Landowners will receive Ft 1,000 per square metre, while the city would later sell the assembled and reclassified area at roughly Ft 14,000 per square metre to Samsung SDI as part of a planned expansion covering around 30 hectares, according to the report.

Although Samsung’s expansion needs have been known for nearly two years, detailed development plans have yet to be made public.

A public forum held on Friday marked a notable development, bringing together local officials, representatives of the factory and local MP Orsolya Miskolczi of the Tisza party.

At the meeting, Samsung communications manager Péter Paplanos said all future environmental monitoring results would be published on the company’s Facebook page, and confirmed an agreement with local NGO Göd-ÉRT to hold public forums every three months.
