Gov’t to avert chaos at Champions League final

The government announced it will pay the roughly Ft 300 million owed to subcontractors involved in organising Saturday’s UEFA Champions League final on May 30 in Budapest after the event’s main contractor, Gyula Balásy’s Lounge Group, ran into financial trouble.
The tax authority NAV froze the company’s accounts earlier this month, leaving Lounge Group unable to pay several subcontractors and service providers.
The situation reportedly also affected payments related to the event’s headline performer.
As some companies refused to continue work without advance payments, concerns emerged that preparations for the Champions League final could be disrupted.
In a Facebook statement, the government said all subcontractors who completed contracted work would be paid and insisted that the event itself is not at risk.
Officials added that the aim is to ensure stable conditions for companies involved in projects considered of national economic and public importance.
