MÁV to lease InterCity carriages from Austria

State railway company MÁV will lease ten InterCity carriages from Austrian railways for the summer season to manage higher traffic at Lake Balaton, Transport and Investment Minister Dávid Vitézy said on Facebook on Tuesday.
Vitézy blamed the previous government for the lack of available capacity, blaming the shutdown of the rolling stock repair base in Dunakeszi and the suspension of InterCity carriage inspections.
The new government is also working on a long-term renewal of the rail fleet, as procurement tenders for new carriages were withdrawn at the end of 2022.
The agreement with Austrian Railways itself marks a major shift, following strained relations under the previous cabinet. Vitézy recalled that Austria launched legal actions against Hungary after former minister of transport János Lázár dismissed the Austrian deputy CEO of the Austro-Hungarian rail company Gysev.
Austria also challenged an AGM resolution that paved the way for the Hungarian state to gain a 75% stake in the company in March 2025 following a capital injection. The decision meant that Austria lost its veto power over key decisions in the company.
