Török: Sulyok does not understand his role
Political analyst Gábor Török responded to the interview conducted by Index with President Tamás Sulyok by observing that Sulyok seems to have only now discovered that the head of state is not condemned to silence but can express his point of view.
Sulyok quoted one-time President László Sólyom to the effect that the ideal head of state is an immovable president who only speaks up during major crises.
Török said the interview reveals that Sulyok still does not understand that the position of the president of the republic does not have only constitutional content but also political content.
Politics are, however not identical with party politics, he added. “It is also politics when I have an opinion and when I stand up for certain values. This is Sólyom’s legacy and not what Tamás Sulyok writes about.
