Hungary leads EU in incarceration rate

A Eurostat report released on Thursday shows that Hungary has the highest rate of incarceration relative to its population in the EU, with 193 prisoners per 100,000 inhabitants in 2024, well above the EU average of 113.
This is a lower rate than in countries such as Poland, Latvia, and the Czech Republic.
At the other end of the scale, Finland and the Netherlands recorded the lowest rates, followed by Germany and Denmark, both at 70 per 100,000 residents.
Eurostat also noted that the total number of prisoners in most EU member states increased by 2% in 2024, reversing a declining trend.
