Aldi accelerates store modernisation

Aldi is renovating around two-thirds of its Hungarian stores by mid-May, with further upgrades planned later this year, as it seeks to pass on efficiency gains through lower prices, the discount chain said on Wednesday.

According to the company, the refurbishment of 124 out of 188 stores in its network will be completed in the current phase, while a further 22 outlets are scheduled for renovation in the third quarter of 2026.

The changes include redesigned interiors and simplified operational processes intended to streamline logistics and in-store workflows.

Bernhard Haider, head of Aldi Hungary, said the updated layout would make product placement more coherent and improve shopping speed, while also easing staff operations.

Everyday essentials will be moved to more prominent positions near the front of stores, with related product categories grouped together to improve navigability.
