On-the-spot heart operation saves stab victim

A dramatic emergency unfolded when an on-call air ambulance crew was dispatched to attend to a man who had been stabbed in the heart.

Dr. Zsolt Dubóczki, chief surgeon at the National Institute of Oncology, was part of the responding team.

According to the institute, the patient was in critical condition and probably had only minutes to live, making transport to hospital too risky.

Dubóczki therefore decided to perform immediate surgery at the scene, on a public street and without a sterile operating theatre.

He opened the patient’s chest and sutured the heart in around seven minutes, stabilising him enough for further hospital treatment.

The patient survived and later thanked the medical team.

Dubóczki said emergency care requires rapid decision-making and adaptability, as field intervention sometimes demands prioritising speed over ideal conditions to save lives.
