Temu to repay customers under GVH settlement

Whaleco Technology, the European operator of the online marketplace Temu, will refund at least Ft 882 million to Hungarian customers and pay a Ft 437 million fine to the state budget, the competition authority GVH said.
Whaleco acknowledged the infringements and waived its right to appeal.
It has committed to implementing a broader consumer protection programme and will compensate Hungarian users who made purchases between November 2023 and September 2024 with Ft 2,000 each.
If total reimbursements fall short of Ft 882 million, the company will be required to pay the difference to the state as an additional penalty.
The GVH found that the company had misled consumers by presenting inflated “discounts” through crossed-out prices, by advertising reductions of “up to 95%” without substantiation, and in some cases promoting non-discounted products as promotional offers.
The authority also flagged the use of time-limited messaging designed to create a sense of urgency.
