Karácsony hopes for Ft 700bn from EU

Budapest mayor Gergely Karácsony said the city could gain access to around Ft 700 billion in EU funding if Hungary’s new government succeeds in quickly reaching an agreement with the EU.
Speaking to news website 24, Karácsony explained that the capital already has a prepared portfolio of investment projects that can be launched immediately once funding becomes available.
Some Ft 300 billion in cohesion funds previously agreed upon for the 2021-27 cycle remain largely unused, said Karácsony, with only Ft 56 billion drawn so far due to restrictions linked to rule-of-law disputes.
He added that additional resources could become available from the EU’s post-Covid recovery fund, provided that Hungary meets conditions and submits a compliant implementation plan by the August 31 deadline.
Cohesion funds, meanwhile, must be fully used by 2029.
Karácsony said the city has a “ready-to-go” list of projects, including the purchase of around 100 new trams, the redevelopment of Népliget park, and the Rákosrendező development project.
The broader investment package also includes transport upgrades, public space renewal, flood protection measures, and housing and social infrastructure improvements.
