Csányi enters billionaires tax debate

“I’m surprised that Hungarian billionaires are already welcoming the idea of a wealth tax without seeing the details”, OTP chairman Sándor Csányi told Telex in a video interview, reacting to Tisza’s plan to levy a tax on wealth in excess of Ft 1 billion.

Csányi added that he would be willing to pay higher income taxes, 15-20% above a certain threshold, but would not consider it fair to impose a special levy on wealth built up over decades.

OTP’s long-running chief said he was surprised by the two-thirds victory of the Tisza Party, adding that he had expected only a narrow win by the opposition.

He confirmed that he had spoken with outgoing prime minister Viktor Orbán but has not yet met Péter Magyar, though he expects to do so soon.

He said he would also welcome consultations with ministers in the new government, noting he has experience to share and that certain current issues need clarification, such as the future financing of Hungarian football.
