Food-saving Munch to focus on existing markets

Hungarian startup Munch, which operates a food-saving platform, has saved food worth Ft 8 billion, equivalent to about 6.5 million meals, since it began operations in 2020, co-founder Albert Wettstein told state news agency MTI.
The company has registered 5 million app downloads and operates 8,000 partners across Hungary and three foreign markets.
The company will focus on deepening operations in Slovakia, Romania and the Czech Republic, as well as refining recently introduced services, including Munch Market and Munch Club, instead of tapping new foreign markets with its service.
Munch Club, a subscription-based programme launched in September 2025, has attracted more than 150 partners and nearly 20,000 users in Szeged, Győr and Budapest.
Munch Market, launched last year, offers near-expiry and seasonal goods from producers and wholesalers.
The company acts as a trader and logistics operator, managing procurement, storage, and distribution from its centre in Fót, while delivery is assigned to a logistics partner.
According to Wettstein, this business segment has strong growth potential in the future.
The Hungarian operations closed in the black last year, while international operations are expected to turn a profit in 2027, Wettstein said.
He added that Munch is taking some credit for the steep fall in food waste in Hungary.
