Hungary’s oldest family doctor dies at 103

Dr. István Körmendi, Hungary’s oldest practicing family doctors, has died at the age of 103, confirmed First District mayor László Böröcz.

Körmendi practiced medicine for decades, serving generations of families since 1957.

Even during the Covid-19 pandemic in 2021, he was still actively working, maintaining close relationships with patients, some for over 70 years.

His life was marked by hardship early on, as due to his Jewish background, he had to study in secret during World War II, and his education was interrupted by forced labour.

After the war, Körmendi completed his studies and continued the family tradition, following in the footsteps of his father, also a physician.

Known for his dedication and deep knowledge of his patients’ histories, Körmendi was widely respected as a doctor who treated entire families across generations.

He often emphasised the importance of trust and personal connection in the doctor-patient relationship.
