Mobile payments surge as fintech use broadens

The share of people using mobile payments in Hungary rose sharply in 2025, increasing from 41% to 48% in a single year, according to Mastercard.

The figure has more than doubled from 22% six years earlier.

Adoption grew faster among Android users, where usage climbed from 36% to 43% over the year, while iPhone users remained more active overall, with 69% reporting mobile payments.

Card penetration is now close to universal, with nearly all adults holding at least one bank card. At the same time, the proportion of people owning multiple cards has risen markedly, reaching 32%.

Fintech adoption is also expanding beyond younger consumers. In 2025, around one in five adults used a fintech card, such as those offered by Revolut, Wise, N26 or Curve.

Balances held on such accounts have increased, as 19% of users treated them as their primary payment method last year, up from 14% in 2024.
