Hadházy and Zugló mayor cover advertising kiosks
Zugló mayor András Rózsa and independent MP Ákos Hadházy covered advertising pillars in Budapest’s 14th District with black plastic on Thursday after the company responsible failed to remove them despite a local ban.
According to a Facebook post by Rózsa, the district council recently adopted a decree prohibiting the use of the pillars, arguing that they are outdated, negatively affect the cityscape, and often display government propaganda.
Rózsa said the district had previously asked Mahir, an advertising company linked to businessman Lőrinc Mészáros, to remove the structures and the posters on them, but the request was not fulfilled.
As pro-government posters continued to appear on the pillars, Rózsa and Hadházy decided to cover the advertisements themselves with black foil.
In a video shared online, the mayor said the poster columns typically spread “propaganda and lies”, which he argued is also contrary to the district’s interests.
Similar tensions over Mahir’s advertising surfaces emerged earlier this year in Keszthely, where the municipality terminated its contract with the company.
Following the decision, Mahir removed its posters from the city’s streets in February.
