Budapest launches intergenerational housing scheme

Budapest has launched the “Together, Easier – Reliable Room Rental” programme to promote cohabitation between elderly residents living alone and young people seeking affordable housing, the municipality said in a statement.

Under the scheme, seniors can rent out a room in their homes to pre-screened young tenants within a legally regulated framework designed to ensure transparent and secure arrangements.

The initiative aims to ease housing pressures while offering companionship and support for older residents.

The programme operates within the AHA (Affordable Housing for All) Budapest framework.

As part of the scheme, the city organises preliminary consultations and preparation sessions for both seniors and prospective tenants.

Matching is based on personal preferences, and participants sign a standardised rental contract with clear terms.

Professional support and follow-up are provided throughout the duration of the arrangement.
