Survey: 1.8mn potential voters still undecided
Nearly a quarter of Hungary’s adult population – about 1.8 million people, or 23% – still does not know which party they will support in the upcoming election, according to a new analysis by the Republikon Institute.
The study found that undecided voters are more likely to be over 40, live in smaller towns, and work in skilled manual professions.
Turnout is also uncertain within this group, about half say they are unlikely to vote, while only 20% are certain they will participate.
Péter Magyar is more popular among the undecided than Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, with 35% expressing support for Magyar, compared with 20% for Orbán.
However, a slight majority still believes that a change of government is unlikely.
Expectations of a change of government are more common among committed party voters.
More of the undecided identify as left-leaning than right-wing, which researchers say may reflect the lack of a strong left-wing political alternative.
Economic and livelihood issues dominate the concerns of undecided voters.
Only 9% cited the war in Ukraine as a major issue, suggesting that messaging focused on war or security may have limited impact in attracting their support.
The results are based on a telephone survey conducted on February 12-17, with 1,000 respondents. The margin of error is 3.5%.
