Gov’t reintroduces fuel price cap

Prime Minister Viktor Orbán announced on Monday that the government had ordered a fuel price freeze following an extraordinary meeting, reintroducing what it calls a “protected price”.
Under the decision, the retail price of 95-octane petrol must be capped at Ft 595 per litre, while diesel fuel may be sold for no more than Ft 615 per litre.
On Monday, the price of 95-octane petrol at MOL stations in Budapest ranged between Ft 576 and Ft 633 per litre, with a nations leverage of Ft 585.
The price of diesel was Ft 576 to Ft 719 with an average of Ft 629.
The measure was due to take effect at Monday midnight.
Only drivers of vehicles with Hungarian licence plates and registration may buy fuel at the lower rates.
