Over 40,000 Hungarians emigrate annually

The number of Hungarians choosing to emigrate is consistently near 40,000 annually and rising, Népszava reports, citing József Nógrádi, head of strategic relations at personnel company Trenkwalder.
The number of emigrants first exceeded 40,000 in 2024, when 41,300 people left.
A growing number of young people are among those leaving, as 8% of emigrés were aged 20-24 in 2008, compared to 16% in 2023.
The number moving back home to Hungary also increased, from 23,860 in 2023, to 29,000 in 2024.
Nógrádi said more emigrants would stay in Hungary if there were job opportunities corresponding to qualifications, salaries providing an adequate living and good prospects.
